UNIT 9: A FIRST – AID COURSE
Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED +LISTEN & READ
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Educational aim: help Ss know how to do when having a wound.
2. Teaching aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to know a little bit what they would do in the situations which require first aid, give and respond to instructions.

III. PROCEDURES:

1. Warm – Up: (5’)
- Have students match words and pictures
1. emergency room.
2. medicated oil.
3. water pack.
4. sterile dressing.
5. ice.
6. alcohol.
2. Presentation: (13’)
- Ask Ss to discuss and match the first-aid requirements and their situations.
¯ Situations
a. A girl has a burn on her arm.
b. A boy has a bad cut on his leg.
c. A girl has a nose bleed.
d. A boy has a bee sting.
- Ask Ss to read aloud their solution before the class.- Explain vocabulary:

+ bandage (n)

+ handkerchief (n)

- Have Ss practice new words.
- Check vocabulary
3. Practice: (15’)
- Play the tape for Ss 3 times
- Ask Ss to practice in pairs
- Ask Ss practice the dialogue in pairs.
- Let Ss read the dialogue silently to select the topics covered in the dialogue.
- Have Ss work in groups to write the answers on a sheet of paper and hand in after finishing.
- Collect students’ papers and correct.

4. Production: (10’)
- Have Ss take turn to play the roles to demonstrate the dialogue
- Ask Ss to retell the story using the information from the dialogue.
“Yesterday there was an emergency at ………..”
5. Homework: (2’)
- Learn by heart vocabulary and the phrases of first-aid requirements.
- Prepare next lesson: Unit 9- Speak/ p. 81
- Individual work
- Group works.
¯ First-aid requirements
1. Use cold water to ease the pain.
2. Use alcohol to wash it.
3. Use a handkerchief to stop the bleeding.
4. Use medicated oil to apply to it.
5. Use ice to ease the pain.
6. Use sterile dressing.
7. Tell her / him to lie down.
8. Put the burn under cold water.
9. Take her / him to the nearest clinic or hospital.
10. Apply the tiger palm to it.
11. Put the cotton ball on it.
12. Use a bandage to bind round it.
13. Rub oil / ointment on it.
14. Use a towel or a handkerchief to cover the wound.
- Read the answers.
- Write down.
- Repeat after teacher.
- Work individual.
- Listen to the tape.
