UNIT 10: RECYCLING
Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED + LISTEN & READ
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Educational aim: Help Ss know the ways to protect the environment.
2. Teaching aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to get some information about the environment problems, do something to protect the environment and save natural resources.
II. PREPARATIONS: Book, cassette tape
III. PROCEDURES:

1. Warm – Up: (5’)
¯ Brainstorming: think of ways to reduce the amount of garbage they produce.
+ reuse plastic bags/ use cloth bags
+ use tree leaves to wrap things
+ use garbage to make fertilizer
+ use used papers to make toys
+ make vegetable matter to make animal food
2. Presentation: (10’)
- Explain new words:
+ Representative (adj)
+ Protect (v)
+ Natural resources (n)
+ Recycle (v)
+ Overpackage (adj)
+ Contact (v)
+ Reuse (v)
+ Reduce (v)
+ Organization (n)
- Have Ss practice new words.
- Ask Ss: Which organization does this logo represent?
- Have Ss listen to the tape, and then predict True/ False sentences.
1. Friends of the Earth is an organization to help people make friends with each other.
2. Miss Blake asks the students to remember three things: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
3. Reduce means buying the products which are overpacked.
4. We cannot reuse things like envelopes, glass, plastic bottle, old plastic bags.
5. Miss Blake says that we should use cloth bags and shouldn’t use plastic bags at all.
6. Recycling means not just throwing things away but trying and finding another use for them.
3. Practice: (15’)
- Ask Ss to read the dialogue silently to check the true/false sentences.
- Ask Ss to give feedback.

- Have Ss practice the dialogue in groups of four.
- Ask Ss to answer the questions in groups.
a. Reduce means not buying products which are overpacked.
b. We can reuse things like envelopes, glass, plastic bottle, old plastic bags.
c. Recycle means not just throwing things away. Try and find another use for them.
d. We can look for information on recycling things by having a contact with an organization like Friends of the Earth, going to the local library or asking your family and friends.
e. We shouldn’t use plastic bags because plastic bags are difficult to be destroyed, so the amount of garbage increases.
4. Production: (13’)
- Have Ss discuss the topic “How to protect our environment?”
- Have Ss write ideas on the board into a list.
5. Homework: (2’)
- Write the questions and full answers in notebooks.
