Period: UNIT 11: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Lesson 3: A closer look 2 I. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, Ss will 1. Knowledge: Use future tenses and reported speech correctly and appropriately to describe natural disasters. a. Vocabulary: related to the topic: science and technology. b. Grammar: future tenses and reported speech. c. Skills: Putting the verbs in the brackets, making sentences, matching, writing sentences, playing games. 2. Competence development:  - Self-study: Determine the duty of study, surf the information and answer the questions related in the lesson. - Problem solution: Analyse the problems and find the solutions for these in the lesson as well as in the discussion. - Cooperation: Assign the duty in team work, pair work, linguistic competence, cooperative learning and communicative competence 3. Virtures: - Responsibility: Ss will be more responsible for protecting nature. - Compassionate quality: Ss will be able to help others to protect the nature and prevent natural disasters. - Honesty: Ss will be able to give correct information as well as factual data II. New lesson: Teacher’ activities Students’ activities 1. Warm up Aim: To warm up the class and lead in the lesson Content: Future tenses and Reported speech. The result of the activity: Students will be able to know about Future tenses and Reported speech about the roles of science and technology in the future. Procedure: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities 1-The duty T may help Ss recall the form and uses of the future simple will do and the future continuous will be doing. 2-How to do the duty Ss talk about these two tenses and the uses of present simple and “going to” to express future actions. 2. Presentation. Aim: Help Ss review the future simple and the future continuous. Content: play a game brainstorming about – some new inventions – in order to lead in the new lesson. Future Simple Tense 1. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tenses. 2. T checks and corrects. 2-How to do the duty II. Reported speech In direct speech, we give the exact words somebody said, and we use quotation marks. In reported speech, we give the meaning of what someone said, but with some changes and without quotation marks. Example: Nam: ‘I want to become a robot designer.’ → Nam said that he wanted to become a robot designer. When the reporting verb (Eg. say or tell) is in the past, the verb in reported speech changes as follows: Present Simple → Past Simple; Present Continuous → Past continuous 3-Check the duty Ex 3: Look at the conservation in GETTING STARTED again. Find and underline the examples of reported speech. Key: Well, my dad told me that only robots would work in factories and clean our homes in the future. Our science teacher said that there would be no more schools: we’d just stay at home and learn on the internet. Ex 4: Complete sentence b in each pair so that it means the same as sentence a, using reported speech. 1. Nick said that he came from a small town in England. 2. My friend said that Brazil would win The World Cup. 3. Olive told Chau that she was leaving Viet Nam the next day/ the following day. 4. David told Catherine that he was unable to read her writing. 5. Minh said that he had overslept that morning. Ex 5. Change the following sentences into reported speech, using the words given in brackets. 1. He said (that) he hadn’t said anything at the meeting the week before/ the previous week. 2. She told me that letter had been opened. 3. Tom said that in 50 years’ time we would probably be living on Mars. 4. Mi said she hoped they would build a city out at sea. 5. Son told us that his wish was to become a young inventor. 4. Further practice Aim: Ss can talk about the important roles of science and technology. Content: make their own sentences using the future tense and reported speech. The result of the activity: Students will be able to make own sentences using the future tense and reported speech about science and technology.
